A new way to offer basic education:
Background: Nowadays nursing needs more and more documentation. This is also true for pre-nurses working in old people’s homes. They have to adapt to the new requierement of documenting their work.
Needs: Pre-nurses used to work with residents without documenting every single step they do. It used to play a minor role for pre-nurses. Now they are confronted with difficult technical terms and first of all have to learn the new words: What do they mean and how to read and write these complicated terms. Reading and writing skills are usually not their core competences. Therefore the task is a big challenge.
Teaching: The training focuses on learning new techniques of mobilising elderly people together with a vocational vocabulary training. The coursebook „Basic education for pre-nurses“ was recently published. Two of three teachers are authors of the cousebook and the teacher’s guide and use the practical approach with a stong work place orientation in class. That’s why the training takes place in an old people’s home. The book, beds and wheel chairs are part of the training.
CONTACTING & MOTIVATING
Participants are selected by their employers/ supervisors in various old people’s homes that cooperate. Initially VHS and the management of the old people’s home agreed on criteria for selecting employees. Criteria are: pre-nurses, high motivation, interested in further education, interested in supporting their own health, need support in writing the documentation.
COMPETENCE ASSESSMENT
Informal assessment: Trainers observe the learners (pre-nurses) doing the different tasks.
VALIDATION OF LEARNING
The trainers perceive the progress of learning by reading and discussing tasks on worksheets and by assessing the practical work the learners show.
After the workshop the learners get a certificate. It documents all the topics the training covers.
