Motivate for Further Learning

Three months of daily activities to practice Swedish, English, Maths, and get better acquainted with how society works in Sweden

Sweden is home to many newcomers from foreign countries, often with a cultural and educational background different from what they find in Sweden. Government and adult education providers offer a wide range of courses to help people learn local language and understand community values. However, some participants in these courses do not reach the goals envisaged, and thus cannot continue neither in the labour market nor in the education system. To tackle this and develop a solution, Västerås folkhögskola used MobileBE to develop new methods to make it easier for participants to integrate into society and the labour market. The approach is based on individual learning plans, placement in (independently existing) language classes matching the individual level, and practical civic education through excursions, study visits, and group discussions. The over-arching goal is empowerment: participants should experience that they can learn quickly, and thus should become motivated to continue their studies in the regular system.

The course included 260 hours of classroom activities.
