Studies with focus on active citizenship – an alternative to regular school
People who missed upper secondary school finalisation typically had problems with the way of teaching
and learning in the ordinary school system. The Swedish folkhögskolor have a solution this: a general
course tailored to the needs of such school-leavers. A core element of the methodology is sharing knowledge with each other. Moreover, the courses try to promote active citizenship, participation in cultural activities, and social awareness. School leaving certificates earned that way would allow learners to proceed to university, but most participants prefer getting directly into employment.
